For cold process soapmakers, oils are not simply a label claim or a way to make a recipe sound luxurious. Each oil brings its own fatty acid profile, which affects hardness, cleansing power, creamy lather, fluffy bubbles, and the way the finished bar feels on skin. Learning to read those differences is one of the most rewarding steps in creating handmade soap with intention.
What Carrier Oils Do in Handmade Soap
In skincare, a carrier oil is usually an oil used to dilute essential oils or nourish the skin in a leave-on product. In soapmaking, the term is often used more broadly for the base oils and butters that make up the recipe before they react with lye.
Once saponification is complete, those oils have been transformed into soap. That means an oil's benefits in a facial oil or body balm do not translate exactly the same way in a wash-off bar. Still, the original oil profile matters greatly because it determines the character of the soap you make.
A well-balanced formula usually combines oils rather than relying on one alone. Some oils help the bar become firm and long-lasting. Others create large, lively bubbles. Others bring a dense, cushiony lather that feels especially lovely for dry or sensitive-feeling skin. The goal is not to find one perfect oil. It is to create a recipe where each ingredient has a clear role.
Choosing Carrier Oils for Soapmaking by Result
Before selecting an oil, decide what you want the finished bar to do. A body bar for everyday use may call for a different balance than a rich facial cleansing bar, a gardener's scrub soap, or a shampoo bar.
For a gentle, conditioning bar
Olive oil is a classic starting point. It makes a mild, conditioning soap with a silky, low-bubble lather. A high-olive-oil recipe can be wonderfully simple, but it generally needs a longer cure and may feel softer at first. It is often paired with firmer oils to create a bar that is easier to unmold and lasts longer in use.
Rice bran oil is another approachable option with a similar gentle character. It can support a creamy bar and is often used as a partial alternative to olive oil. Like all oils, it should be stored well and used within its best-by period to help reduce the risk of rancidity.
For hardness and creamy lather
Coconut oil is popular because it produces excellent bubbles and a firm bar. Yet more is not always better. At a high percentage, coconut oil can create a very cleansing soap that some skin types find drying. Palm oil, where responsibly and transparently sourced, is valued for hardness and stable, creamy lather. Shea butter adds a creamy, comforting quality to soap and is a favorite for recipes designed around dry-feeling skin. Cocoa butter can also contribute firmness and a more substantial bar. For a lighter, more balanced recipe
Sunflower, sweet almond, avocado, and grapeseed oils can each add conditioning qualities. Sunflower oil high in oleic acid is generally more suitable for soapmaking than standard high-linoleic sunflower oil when you want a longer-lasting bar.
Sweet almond and avocado oils can make a recipe feel especially refined, but they are often best used as part of the blend rather than the entire base. Grapeseed oil is lighter and can be appealing in small amounts, although its shorter shelf life means fresh stock and good storage matter.
The Fatty Acids Behind the Bar
You do not need to memorize every fatty acid before making your first batch. Knowing a few patterns, however, will make recipe choices much easier.
Lauric and myristic acids, found in coconut and babassu oils, support cleansing and bubbly lather. They are useful in moderation because a bar that is very cleansing can feel less comfortable on dry skin.
Palmitic and stearic acids contribute hardness, longevity, and creamy lather. These are found in butters, palm oil, lard, tallow, and other firm fats. A recipe with too little of these acids may make a softer bar that dissolves quickly in the shower.
Oleic acid supports a mild, conditioning character. Olive, avocado, sweet almond, and high-oleic sunflower oils are common sources. A very high-oleic recipe can be lovely, but it often benefits from a patient cure and a firming partner.
Linoleic and linolenic acids can add a conditioning quality, but oils high in these polyunsaturated fats may be more prone to oxidation. This does not mean avoiding them altogether. It means using fresh oils, storing them away from heat and light, and building a formula that considers shelf life as well as skin feel.
Start With a Simple, Balanced Oil Blend
New soapmakers often buy many oils at once, then feel overwhelmed by the possibilities. A more practical approach is to begin with three or four dependable ingredients. For example, a blend of olive oil for mildness, coconut oil for bubbles, a firm butter or responsibly sourced palm oil for structure, and a small amount of castor oil for lather stability can teach you a great deal.
Make one recipe, take good notes, and change only one variable in the next batch. If you replace olive oil with rice bran oil, keep the other percentages the same. If you increase shea butter, observe how that changes hardness, lather, and cure time. This slow, intentional method gives you useful information that a random collection of experiments never will.
Every oil change requires recalculating the lye amount. Different oils need different amounts of sodium hydroxide to saponify safely. Never estimate, and never use a recipe calculator as a substitute for careful weighing. Use a precise digital scale, follow safe lye-handling practices, and wear appropriate gloves and eye protection.
Superfatting and Carrier Oil Choices
Superfat is the percentage of oils intentionally left unsaponified in a recipe. A modest superfat can make a bar feel gentler, but it is not a cure-all for an overly cleansing formula. If a recipe contains a very high amount of coconut oil, increasing the superfat may help somewhat, but adjusting the oil balance is usually the smarter first step.
For many everyday cold process soaps, a 5 percent superfat is a common starting point. A recipe designed for very dry-feeling skin may use a somewhat higher level, while a formula intended for humid climates or a long shelf life may need a more conservative approach. It depends on the oils used, the purpose of the bar, and how it will be stored.
Also remember that more unsaponified oil can increase the chance of rancidity over time, particularly when the formula includes delicate oils. A beautiful soap is one that feels good when used and remains fresh through its intended lifespan.
Match the Recipe to the Person Using It
The best carrier oils for soapmaking are not necessarily the most expensive or the trendiest. They are the oils that help you create a safe, well-cured bar suited to the person using it.
For a family body bar, you may prioritize a reliable balance of mildness, bubbles, and durability. For a facial bar, you may choose a lower-cleansing formula with a creamy feel. For a gift, think about the recipient's preferences, including fragrance sensitivities and whether they prefer a hard, long-lasting bar or a softer, more luxurious lather.
Natural ingredients deserve the same thoughtful approach as any other cosmetic ingredient. Patch test finished products when appropriate, use skin-safe fragrance or essential oil levels, and avoid promising that a soap will treat eczema, acne, or other medical conditions. A carefully made bar can support a comforting cleansing ritual, but skin concerns that persist or worsen deserve professional care.
